FEMINA CRACK [2012]

FEMINA CRACK (Fenda Femina) 36 holy mouths open a slit in the ecclesiastical concrete. Gathered in a stop-motion sequence, they seem to whisper something, very discretely… Rio Vermelho Church, built in the nineteenth century in Salvador, where it all began*. The mouths, generally closed, or slightly open, are mouths of “exemplary” caste, silent, sacrificed women. What can these big lips tell you now, whispering inside out, outside in, after several centuries of colonized “desires”?

IIndependent action on the facade of the Church of Rio Vermelho, Salvador, the first city founded by the Portuguese in Brazil. Originally called São Salvador da Bahia de Todos os Santos, it was the country’s capital until 1763.
